AMI Orientation Course (6-12) Age level

COURSE PURPOSE 

The Montessori Orientation Course for Ages 6 to 12 is an introduction to the developmental characteristics and needs of children ages 6 to 12. It supports the understanding of this developmental stage for parents, caregivers, school staff, or any individual seeking knowledge about this age group of children. The Course presents an examination of the development of the child in accordance with Dr. Maria Montessori’s principles and philosophy. Emphasis is given to children between the ages of six and twelve years old. 

 

The course supports the following objectives: 

  • To gain general knowledge of the Montessori approach to child development and education
  • To explore how an adult can best support optimal development for this age group in any environment and to identify and remove obstacles to optimal development
  • To understand the powers for development active at this stage, and the needs and characteristics of children at this stage of development
  • To understand the general importance of Observation as a basis for providing developmental support for 6 to 12 year old children in any environment

 

DURATION OF THE COURSE 

This online course will cover 60 hours of work. 33 hours of work will be synchronous (when we meet online) and the rest 27 hours will be asynchronous (on your own time).  

The course will run over three weeks (Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri. format) with Twelve live online sessions from 4:30pm to 7:30pm(IST) on the following dates: 

  • 2,3,5,6,9,10,12,13,16,17,19,20 December, 2024

Directed online learning in your own time, the asynchronous part, will include recorded lectures, videos, readings, student discussions and other exercises. Digital resources will be hosted by Montessori Institute of Bangalore.

In addition to these, the student will need to do 9 hours of observation of children in this age group – either in a Montessori environment or other informal environment. More details will be given at the start of the course. 

COURSE DELIVERY 

The course combines the following: 

  • Live lectures, with time for questions and discussion 
  • Pre-recorded audio and video lectures 
  • Presentation of videos, photographs 
  • Directed study, including reading 
  • Directed practice of techniques 

ZOOM SESSIONS 

The live lectures will be delivered via the platform Zoom – https://zoom.us/, which is free and simple to use. You will need access to a computer with speakers, a microphone, and a good internet connection, preferably located in a space where you will not be disturbed. Please download the app before the first session and check your sound and video connection.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS 

There are three required Assignments and an Observation Assignment. Written assignments should be typewritten, double spaced, and use correct spelling and grammar. (Handwritten papers will be accepted if the handwriting is impeccably legible.) 

You may use quotes from Montessori articles and books, when relevant, to support your answers, and avoid using resources that were not provided by the course or written by Dr. Montessori and her colleagues, (e.g. avoid websites, blogs). 

 

Papers addressing each aspect of the assignment are required for a Pass. All assignments are due by the stated date / time and must be submitted through the Google Drive platform. If an assignment does not contain all components for a satisfactory mark, the essay reader will indicate what is needed and you will have an opportunity to resubmit the paper in order to meet the requirements. 

 

AMI REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION 

Admission to the Programme does not guarantee certification. Each student must meet the following, basic requirements in all areas of the course in order to receive the AMI Assistants Certificate 6-12 at the end of the Programme: 

Certification: 

  1. A minimum of 90% attendance at all lectures and pre-recorded sessions 2. Required reading as directed by the course 
  2. The completion of the observation assignment as directed by the course 
  3. Submission and completion of three papers (500 words each) or the equivalent assignment on topics set by the Trainer to be submitted by the date stipulated by the course 

STATIONERY AND COURSE MATERIALS 

To complete the requirements of the course, these items will be useful: 

  • Note taking materials daily (notebook or computer) 
  • Computer and fast internet connection 
  • Montessori resources and books (Approx. Rs.3,000/-)

ATTENDANCE POLICY 

In order to obtain the Assistants Course Certificate a minimum of 90% attendance is required for both the live sessions and it is expected that you view or listen to 90% of the assigned video and audio content. 

If you are absent for more than one live session, you will not be eligible for the Assistants Course certificate. (Recorded sessions, if available, are offered as a courtesy to you only). 

AMI requires attendance records to be kept and full attendance and satisfactory participation are required for all sessions. Lectures begin promptly at the scheduled hour. 

Please arrive at a good time for your lectures so that sessions may start on time.

REFUND POLICY 

 

The fee is non-refundable. Once paid it cannot be refunded for any reason either prior to the commencement of or during the course on withdrawal of a student. Students will be required to submit a Refund Policy Acceptance letter at the time of payment of fee. 

 

AMI Trainer: PRABHA KARTHIK

 

Ms. Prabha Karthik completed the AMI 6 to12 training course in 2009 and the 3 to 6 course in 2016 in Navadisha Montessori Foundation, Chennai, India. She has worked as part of the training team in Navadisha under Ann Dunne, first as a course assistant and later as a trainer-in-training from 2012 to 2021. She has helped to conduct many orientation courses, both online and in-person. She has also been a National Examiner on AMI Elementary courses. She holds a Master’s degree in Econometrics from Madras University, Diploma in Special Education from V-Excel Education Trust, and Diploma in Elementary Education from the National Institute of Open Schooling, Government of India. 

 

Prabha has been involved with a Gandhian organisation Shanti Ashram for over 14 years. Through a partnership with Shanti Ashram, Arigatou International, UNICEF and Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC), she has facilitated ethics education workshops for children, young people and parents both in rural and urban communities, within India and outside. She has also been part of an international working group as a Montessori specialist to help create and implement ethics education programmes for children under 12 years of age.
